Having just returned from our annual trip to the Netherlands, my fiancé and I were viewing the pictures that we had taken with our new digital camera. There were of course pictures of the villages we biked thru and visited, pictures of family and friends, and pictures of HORSES! This year I was fortunate enough to convince Hans, my fiancé, to go and visit his family in January. I included the fact that his mother was turning 77 on January 14, 2007 to convince him that we could arrive early enough to take in the Stallion show. He not only agreed, but arranged with his sister to get tickets for five of us, he included, to attend the show on Saturday. (Now Hans is a dairy man and for him to agree to go and spend an entire day looking at horses was surprising to say the least.)

Dutch Lessons by Theodore
Here are some short lessons in Dutch by Theodore Westerhof, dutch speaker and frequenter of the Friesian YahooGroup where these lessons were originally posted.
Lesson 1: The most important words of all
Paard = Horse
Hengst = Stallion
Merrie = Mare
Veulen = Foal
Hengstveulen = Colt
Merrieveulen = Filly
We see that Dutch can form new words by combining existing ones, just like German.

Useful Dutch Words & Terms
Native English-speaking Friesian owners often have trouble with Dutch terms and pronunciation. So, even though I am -far- from an expert on the Dutch language, (or even able to cobble together a sentence!), I’ve collected a few things that might help us out. Feel free to e-mail me if there are any mistakes, or you if wish to add some information. Dutch-speakers: your input and submittals are very valuable and more than welcome!

Antique Friesian Postcards
Here are three photos which will surely be of interest. They are from the wonderful book: Carriages of the Past;Victorian postcards of the collection of Mario Broekhuis. Published in 1998 by Wim Knijnenburg Produkties. The first thumbnail is of Alva 113 Preferant, yes, that is 113, a very early photo of an Approved Friesian stallion. He is the fifth of six approved sons by De Regent 32 Preferant, son of Prins Hendrik 24. Of the six sons, he is the only to produce approved sons of his own, two, Oom 119 and Stefanus 124.
The next two photos are also of Friesians, shown in front of the traditional Frisian sjees. Unfortunately, these photos are in a high resolution so that the text beneath them can be read, so the enlarged version may take some time for them to load properly.
